You Need To Ask

You Need To Ask

I was so confused. One of the freelancers I work with just wasn’t entering shipping data correctly. Filling in the wrong boxes may mean that the box gets lost in shipping. Worse, the items may be destroyed on arrival because the system doesn’t recognize them.

I thought I had done enough training. We’d gone through the steps and I’d sent Skype messages clarifying the key parts of the process.

But he wasn’t following the steps. It was aggravating and stressful. We even had 1 order held up for a few weeks with thousands of dollars of inventory in limbo.

My first thoughts were blame. I had done the training, why was it so hard to follow the steps I laid out. I thought to myself “Why does he keep doing wrong?”

But during our next conversation I asked a different question. “What am I doing wrong?”

It’s a difficult question to ask, especially to someone who ‘works for you’. Asking is admitting that I might be wrong. Then, it’s just as difficult to remain open to hearing the feedback.

He reminded me that he has lots of clients and that he only manages my shipments every 3 weeks or so. It was difficult for him to keep track of everything in the jumble of Skype messages, oral conversations, and screenshots.

I realized the confusion was mainly my fault. The steps were clear to me because I’ve done these shipments for over a year. I even had a step-by-step document but I hadn’t even shared it with him. I hit myself on the forehead. “Doh!”

I foolishly assumed that he would remember every detail in a few short conversations.

When I shared the step-by-step document, he replied…

“This… would have been helpful earlier.”

Yes it would have been. I made a mistake by failing to share it.

If You’re Willing To Ask, You’re Able To Learn

It’s difficult to ask for potentially negative feedback, especially from someone who works for you. But remember, it’s just as difficult to give that negative feedback to someone you work for, and it’s potentially much more risky.

As the person in charge, you must be willing to ask. “What and I doing wrong?” You must build relationships where others feel safe expressing harsh truths. You must be willing to listen to the feedback, make changes to your own behavior, and potentially even apologize once you realize you are the core troublemaker.

This freelancer’s access to the straightforward documentation helped clarify important tasks. On his further suggestion, I’m also filming screen capture videos to clarify even more.

This positive change was sparked by an invaluable realization. The realization was revealed because I was willing to ask. “What and I doing wrong?”

You may benefit from asking this question as well.

Necesitas Preguntar

Estaba tan confundido.

Si Usted Está Dispuesto A Preguntar, Usted Puede Aprender
